A four-phase system that takes dogs from foundation to finished work.

Phase One

Foundation

Every dog starts here. We establish communication, control, and calmness. Skills include leash pressure, place, recall, crate conditioning, impulse control, and intro to steadiness and environmental neutrality.

Phase Two

Obedience to Gundog Transition

This is the bridge between basic obedience and real gundog work. Dogs learn heel with precision, delivery to hand, whistle sit, intro to marks and blinds, place with distance, and steadiness under mild distraction.

Phase Three

Gundog Development

Phase 3 is where a dog transitions from obedience into true gundog work. Dogs in this stage learn to think, take direction, and perform reliably under increasing levels of distraction and pressure.

Fetching and Delivery

Dogs retrieve confidently and cleanly on command, delivering to hand without rolling or avoidance.

Walking Fetch

Dogs maintain forward momentum and clean pick-ups through multiple reps.

Directional Casting

Dogs take clean left and right casts from a whistle sit and leave the handler willingly when sent.

Pattern Blinds

Dogs run established pattern blinds with confidence, straight lines, and clean whistle sits.

Simple Cold Blinds

Dogs run short cold blinds with commitment and the ability to recover from mistakes.

Cheating Singles

Dogs choose correct lines even when shortcuts exist.

Honoring

Dogs remain steady while another dog works.

Water Work

Dogs enter water confidently, retrieve across water, and remain steady at the edge.

Terrain Transitions

Dogs hold lines through cover and footing changes.

Early Memory Work

Finished Work

Phase 4 represents the highest standard in the McKinney Gundogs program. Dogs in this stage demonstrate advanced handling, reliable steadiness, and the ability to perform confidently in realistic hunting environments.

Multiple Marks

Training gundogs isn't something he fell into — it's what he was built for. With 15 years of hands-on experience developing dogs from raw pups to finished hunting partners, he brings a calm, methodical approach to every dog that comes through the program.

He genuinely loves this work. Not just the finished product, but the process — the early mornings, the incremental breakthroughs, the moment a high-drive dog finally settles into the work it was bred for. That passion shows in every dog that leaves the program.
